Workshops @ Ashland, Oregon Stop - Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

The workshops will be held at Oak Street Dance Studio in Ashland (www.oakstreetdance.com)

4-6pm: "Dancing on the Right Side of your Brain" with Tempest
Artists, writers, and other creative folk are said to be "right-brained" -they think in pictures, images, and random patterns. Engineers, accountants, and other number/fact people are said to be "left-brained"-meaning they think more mathematically, linearly, orderly. Learn to unleash your creative side and truly be "in the moment" with your dancing. Often, a dancer can get too focused on a choreography, counting of steps, beats, and therefore become "left-brained" in their dancing -meaning they're being technical, and not dancing creatively, spontaneously, from the heart! In this unusual workshop, we're going to do some mental and physical exercises that will help you engage your right brain in your dancing!

6:30-8:30pm: "Understanding Folkloric Music" with Tim Rayborn
A class that explores the huge variety of music available beyond traditional belly dance music. This includes traditional and medieval music of Spain, North African folk music, folk traditions of Egypt beyond the typical BD genres, classical and folk music of Iran, traditional Iraqi music, Ottoman Classical and Turkish folk music, and various folk music traditions (vocal and instrumental) from the Balkans. This is more of an educational rather than a participatory class (i.e., it's about listening to new genres and getting background, rather than learning how to dance to them).
