"Artists revive old myths and generate new ones. Because their primary sources are spiritual, nonmaterial, they can have a clearer vision. By the use of myths, artists put society in touch with universal basic questions and feelings we all have about life." -Audrey Flack, Art & Soul "There is so much to say about magick, and how it reflects in our daily lives, our myths, our dreams ---but only art can communicate it best." -Laura Schmidt |
Art is a question and answer session. It's the artist's solution to the scientific method, without the necessity for being precise or having to reproduce a predictable outcome. Art making is simply visual brainstorming, as well as a reflection of the birth process: conception, gestation, birth! So, art making tends to be a process of personal revelation for the artist. So what is the final result's purpose then? The art then acts a means to inform and educate the community; it becomes a visually oriented teaching tool that has the potential to truly enlighten. Art is also a powerful means of mythmaking. The myth is a rather underestimated and overlooked thing that is present in every part of our lives on a daily basis. People constantly involve themselves in personal and public mythmaking, re-describing or clarifying themselves and their world. So myth does not exist solely in the realms of fantasy, rather it is intertwined with all truths, and invariably magnifies them. To remind people of myths is to remind people of the many faces of Truth, and art is very capable of that. The true beauty of myth is uncovered when one explores the myriad pieces that have been woven together to create it. Suddenly, you are looking into the eyes of the Weaver herself; that is you, and all those who have come before you and will come after you who have played their part in working a pattern into the web. It is a rare experience that most never experience. But the artists who do look into the mirror of myth are given the opportunity and responsibility to share it, thereby enabling others to take part vicariously. In my own personal experience, I have been driven to create the unseen, the unknown, and to many what can be conceived as unbelievable from their standpoint. Why? Well, the simplest reason is this: I am a Witch. My religion, my path, has provided a spiritual, physical, and metaphysical viewpoint that most common people do not encounter, or for that matter, wish to. Witchcraft is a religion of balance, meaning equal parts of light and dark, equal necessary forces. In the modern world we live in, it becomes very hard to mentally see and feel that balance for many reasons. Within my spiritual practices, I work to understand the balance of the world more clearly, and often, what I discover cannot be easily put into words, but it can be transcribed in the realm of visual art. This process is where the threads of myths reveal themselves to me visually. As I begin to pull away from the individual revelations, I am allowed to see the possibilities. When I am able to formulate the larger dynamic, my art ceases to be a self-oriented expression and begins to provoke opportunities to educate and illuminate others.
Because of the nature of having so many different pieces of one or more
related myths, my work naturally lends itself to mixed media, oddly mixing
immediate techniques (such as drawing and transfer) with those requiring
painstaking processes (painting and etching, digital collage). Each process
and technique brings to the piece its own unique symbolism and lexicon,
creating a visual language for the reader. With the addition of selected
text, I find that I can help define the work better for the viewer without
detrimentally affecting the impact of the images...or I can incur deeper
thought by playing peek-a-boo with the text, giving a piece the feeling
that a charm has been sewn into, the magick of which the viewer only gets
a glimpse of. Through all of this, I weave a web, a path, a story, that explores just as far outwardly, as it does inward. |
